Know Thy Enemy #2: Transitions (Part 1, Waiting)

The next time-thief we're dealing with is what I had been calling handoffs, but over the course of building this lesson I've decided to use the broader term "transitions." This particular lesson is part 1, which deals with the waiting periods between tasks (I'll get to the handoffs problem in part 2).

Key concepts in this lesson include:

  • The difference between resource efficiency (designing workflows to maximize utilization of your resources) and flow efficiency (designing workflows to optimize client experience and emphasize delivery speed).
  • How the switching time between tasks leads to workflow delays.
  • Why flow efficiency actually leads to better business outcomes.

Many of the concepts in this lesson come from the book This Is Lean, by Niklas Modig and Par Ahlstrom.
